Originally named ‘Drumbeat’, Spank Me was built in Fremantle, Australia in 1989 by none other than Alan Bond. Despite her owner’s mounting financial problems, she was entered in the 1989-1990 Sydney to Hobart and not only survived the horrendous weather conditions that year, but also won the race.
Sold later that year, the vessel went to another prominent real estate tycoon – this time in New York, and the vessel was relocated to the east coast of the United States to compete for the next decade as ‘Congere’. Donated in the late 1990’s to the Naval Academy Sailing Foundation, ‘Congere’ served as a training vessel for young American Naval sailors until she was purchased in 2001 by Spank Me Racing Corp. She continued her competitive sailing as ‘Spank Me BT’. Her last big race was the 2002 Newport – Bermuda Race in which she placed 3rd.
OzSail purchased the vessel in January, 2004 and relocated her back to her home country of Australia. She has kept her spankingly fun name and now conducts 2-day, 2-night Whitsundays sailing holidays around the World Heritage Listed Whitsunday Islands and Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
